The Swiss Army Knife from Victorinox
Victorinox AG, based in Ibach, Schwyz, has been producing the world-famous Swiss Army Knife for over 100 years. In 1884, Karl Elsener founded a small knife smithy and had the revolutionary idea of producing a small, compact knife with many practical functions for everyday use – thus, the Swiss Army Knife was born. Over the years, customer needs and technologies have continually evolved.
The history of Victorinox is closely linked to the transformation of the Swiss Army knife and sports knife into a cult object. The legendary Swiss Army knife has evolved, acquired additional functions, and is available in a wide variety of versions worldwide. Quality, functionality, innovation, and distinctive design with iconic character are of utmost importance to Victorinox. Today, Victorinox is a global company with over 2,000 employees worldwide.
The product range includes Victorinox pocket knives, Victorinox watches, household and professional knives, travel luggage, and even perfumes. Victorinox products guarantee the highest standards in all areas and the highest quality. The majority of Victorinox products are manufactured in Switzerland.
The iconic design of the cult knife
The Swiss Army knife is often mentioned when it comes to naming typical Swiss design.
"The reduced design of the Swiss Army Knife follows the production logic and strategy of the product, which combines maximum function with minimum volume. Symbolic of Swiss design, the pocket knife grew from a locally significant concept into a global icon." – atelier oï, La Neuveville
Distinctive form, high-quality materials, precise craftsmanship, and a focus on maximum functionality are what characterize good product design. The Victorinox Swiss Army Knife is so "designy" because it doesn't place any emphasis on it. It combines tradition, function, and good design, which is what makes it so special and distinctive.
The history of the knife
In 1891, Karl Elsener first supplied the Swiss Army with his Soldier's Knife. This knife was intended as a dining aid and, at the same time, as a tool for the rifle. Elsener developed a lighter and more functional successor, the Officer's and Sports Knife, which made his cutlery workshop world-famous as the "Original Swiss Army Knife." Even though the knife was no longer part of the official equipment of the Swiss Army, it helped the company achieve its breakthrough. Later, NASA and the German Bundeswehr, for example, were also equipped with this knife. Today, the continuously developed Swiss Army Knife from Victorinox is available in over 100 versions - from the small pocket knife to the "Swiss Tool pocket tools", such as the Swiss Tool X Plus Ratchet , a small tool case with 38 functions or tools in a case.
