CITIZEN – Watches for everyone, appreciated worldwide
When the Shokosha Research Institute, the forerunner of CITIZEN, introduced the first Japanese-made pocket watch in 1924, the majority of pocket watches sold in Japan were still imported. Excited by the idea that the new watch could capture the hearts of a broad segment of the population, Tokyo's then-mayor named it "CITIZEN." The watch name then became the company name. And in 1930, Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. was born.

CITIZEN is now one of the world's most recognized watchmakers, handling all production steps in-house. Since 1918, this philosophy has inspired the company to take the watch in all sorts of new directions, whether it's the development of advanced satellite-synchronized watches or its patented Eco-Drive technology, which is incorporated into all of the brand's solar-powered watches. CITIZEN was the first watch brand to recognize the potential of light.
